Lighting is tantalizing.

Is it a designers primary purpose to develop a vision for the lighting that works seamlessly with the architecture, enhance a function, or leave a lighter carbon footprint?

Does lighting limit opportunities or create them?

USS MIDWAY CHOOSES OPTILED AS LED BULB SUPPLIER

USS MIDWAY CHOOSES OPTILED AS LED BULB SUPPLIER

(January 2008) The USS Midway Museum has purchased and installed Optiled Technology, LLC LED Bulbs on this great Air Craft Carrier.

Using over 2,000 Optiled G12 Festival Lamps supplied by One Solution Lighting and Controls (onesolutionlighting.com) along with 12 different weather resistant belts that hold the bulbs, Optiled products were installed because of the ECO friendly energy efficiency design, clarity, and reliability of the Festival bulb.

Each Bulb uses just 2 watts of electricity and with a life expectancy of 35,000 hours (approximately 4 years) the Optiled LED Festival Bulbs last many more hours than traditional incandescent bulbs which not only save the Midway Museum money through electricity charges and bulb maintenance, but is also an environmentally "GREEN" product.

Festival 2 Watt bulbs operate on standard, worldwide voltages (both AC and DC). Manufactured with UV-protected polycarbonate materials and utilizing gapless manufacturing, the Festival 2W is rated for both indoor and outdoor use. It also uses fire-resistant polymers which means the Festival 2W is also the choice for the safety conscious. Our lamps last up to and beyond 35,000 hours – many, many times more than traditional, incandescent lighting. That means less bulb changing and large reductions in maintenance costs.

Optiled both guarantees and warranties its products for 35,000 hours giving the Midway Museum added confidence that it was purchasing the right bulb for the project.

Durability and low energy usage without compromising performance! Choose OPTILED for your next lighting solution.

Solar Powered LEDs Light Up Highways

by Justin Thomas, Virginia on 11.23.07

In England, they are testing out an new way to illuminate roads using solar power and LEDs. These active markers have an edge over passive reflectors because they store solar energy during the day, and then emit light at night to improve visibility from about 300 feet to 3000 feet. The LED-based units reportedly extend driver reaction time from 3.2-seconds to over half a minute when cruising at 60mph. They have an expected life-span of eight to ten years and are said to have reduced night time accidents in certain areas by over 70-percent. The lights is produced and marketed by Astucia SolarLite. :: Newspress via Engadget via Autoblog

the switch to CFL

cfl_final-iea.jpg

According to a new report published by the International Energy Agency (IEA), a global switch to efficient lighting systems would trim the world's electricity bill by nearly one-tenth. The carbon dioxide emissions saved by such a switch would, it concludes, dwarf cuts so far achieved by adopting wind and solar power. Wow. According to Paul Waide, a senior policy analyst with the IEA and one of the report's authors, "19% of global electricity generation is taken for lighting -- that's more than is produced by hydro or nuclear stations, and about the same that's produced from natural gas." For the individual TreeHugger, the report concludes that the easiest, most obvious switch to make is from incandescent bulbs to compact fluorescent systems, and to watch out for the LED revolution, just around the lighting corner. ::BBC News via ::Gristmill
